Why didn't Edward the confesser avenge his brother Alfred?
I've been reading about the events leading up to the Norman conquest and this is the only thing to confuse me thus far. Alfred was killed very brutally under his half brothers rule yet when he was invited by harthacnut to help rule the kingdom he did nothing to seek justice as far as I know. Why was this?

Because he was weak and powerless and without experience. He had been in forced exile in France for 25 years just raised by his mother, his father was killed in battle by the Danish raider Cnut. This Danish pirate Cnut managed to kill the English king, then rape the English queen Emma and hold her captive till she produced bastard sons to Cnut...the price was....her two sons (the real kings of England), just little kids, could live but only in exile.
When they (Edward and Alfred) came back years later. the bastard sons of Cnut made through his years long rape of Emma....attacked....They caught Alfred and even though he was only a teen lengthily tortured him to death.
Edward escaped back to France and decades later Cnut was dead, the two usurper bastard sons were dead and his mother was dead. He had no one left to take revenge on. It was too late.
