Is 40 minutes too long to commute to work?

Hello! So I just got a job offer at a flooring place that is 37 miles away with a 40 min drive. It's full time and I wouldn't have to deal with traffic. It's also only freeway driving. This is in NorCal. Is 40 min doable? It will be mainly disposable income. I'm just worried that I'll get burned out and miss having more time in the day. The salary would range anywhere from 45-65k. I need to buy a new car so would it be worth it to stick with it for a 6 months to a year? Then I can just find something closer

I'd say it is just about right. It can be really relaxing to get on the open road after a hard day's work. You won't be losing much time anyway. There are a few downsides though. You will spend more on gas, going home for lunch will be out of the question, when you leave for work you'll have to be certain that you have everything you'll need for the day, and when you get home you probably won't want to go back out.

Given that my daily commute each way is at least 90 minutes, and that's the shortest I've had in the 35 years since leaving school I'd have to say your commute is nothing.

But I recently read an article somewhere that claimed average daily commutes are about 40 minutes, so even without my personal bias what you face is still entirely normal. And when you claim that it'll only be 6 months to a year before you can find something closer then it's a no-brainer. Stick the music on and 40 minutes will pass in a flash. My last job involved 3 hours each way and that still wasn't the longest I've done for a job: that was half an hour more and was on a bicycle for a 70 mile trip each way for seven years. But I saved hugely on the costs of running a car and didn't need to waste time or money on gym memberships.

    Go for it.

I have done longer, and you have to work.

    It can be for some.

Depends how much value you place on your time. What is it worth to you to sleep in an extra 20 minutes. What is it worth to you to be home 20 minutes sooner. Stay up an extra twenty minutes, Play with the kids or spouse for some extra time.

The cost of drive is not just gas insurance car title registration oil, tires it is TIME. How much is your time worth TO YOU not to be on the road going from A to B.

You have already said you are looking at getting a job that is closer. Obviously the rate of pay of this job would also be a factor.

YOU HAVE A JOB what is the real issue. Many are looking for one and would drive much further if they could get one.

You make this sound like hours and hours in both directions and you get Minimum wage.

Full time Minimum wage is less than $30,000 a year. You are doing alright as compared to many.

Welcome to the real world where most cannot party EVERYDAY.

40 minutes is not a horrible commute, unless it's for minimum wage. I have a 19 mile commute that usually takes 40 minutes due to traffic.

Only 40 minutes? I had many jobs where I drove 3 hours each way on top of a 10 hour work day. Then I got smart and became a professional driver and drove OTR 700+ miles per day.
