The President can only fire Federal employees, not employees of the state or local jurisdiction.

Simply put, I know that the President of the United States can fire a Federal Judge, but what about a State District Court judge? My small understanding is that they are elected, and federal are appointed, therefore Federal can be fired, but District/State cannot. Am I correct?
