Americans take letters, mailboxes, and mail delivery for granted, as part of everyday life. Unfortunately, the rest of the world (outside the well-off countries) don't have it so good. They are afraid people will steal the mail; the government can't afford to have a Postal Service; the level of education is nowhere near the USA; and letter-writing concerning complaints about government usually falls on deaf ears.
