why are liquor bottle so oddly shaped?

Like Hennessy, martell, or araks, for example. Why can't they be normally shaped like wine or beer bottles?

It's all about marketing and brand identification. Patron tequila has some bottles that are really works of art, aesthetic in every sense. The shape of a Courvoisier bottle is instantly recognizable.

When Absolute bought Frïs Vodka, it downgraded it from a premium spirit (that it deserves to be) to a price attractive offering. It took away the imposing heavy glass bottle, and packaged it in plastic. It's still my favorite, and now its even less expensive.
