How does the concept of a niche help to reduce competition within ecosystems?

The concept doesn't do diddly-squat. You are thinking of resource partitioning, in which there are subtle differences between the habits of similar species.

There's only ever one species within the same ecosystem - once upon a time two related finches were found living in the same tree, so biologists scratched their heads, somewhat confused. It turned out that one finch species lived in the lower branches only and the other in the top branches only - so there was no competition for resources. Effectively, they each had their niche and were able to thrive.
