  • If you are under treatment for a year, are treatment compliant, cannot maintain employment - most likely yes, It is not a guaranteed diagnosis.

    SSA Blue Book

    12.03 Schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders (see 12.00B2), satisfied by A and B, or A and C:

    Medical documentation of one or more of the following:

    Delusions or hallucinations;

    Disorganized thinking (speech); or

    Grossly disorganized behavior or catatonia.

    AND

    Extreme limitation of one, or marked limitation of two, of the following areas of mental functioning (see 12.00F):

    Understand, remember, or apply information (see 12.00E1).

    Interact with others (see 12.00E2).

    Concentrate, persist, or maintain pace (see 12.00E3).

    Adapt or manage oneself (see 12.00E4).

    OR

    Your mental disorder in this listing category is “serious and persistent;” that is, you have a medically documented history of the existence of the disorder over a period of at least 2 years, and there is evidence of both:

    Medical treatment, mental health therapy, psychosocial support(s), or a highly structured setting(s) that is ongoing and that diminishes the symptoms and signs of your mental disorder (see 12.00G2b); and

    Marginal adjustment, that is, you have minimal capacity to adapt to changes in your environment or to demands that are not already part of your daily life (see 12.00G2c).

    What about it? If you are unable to work and earn $1170 a month for at least a year because of your condition and your income/resources are under limits, then apply and find out if you will be entitled. Call 1-800-772-1213 and make an appointment to file either over the phone or in the office.

    You do not have to have been under treatment for a year nor do you have to have been off work for a year before filing. The medical evidence must show that it would be reasonable that you wouldn't be able to work for at least a year due to your health. A person could become disabled April 1st, file a claim April 2nd and it could be approved - an example would be a terminal condition or ALS or kidney failure - there are all sorts of conditions which would result in an approval almost immediately.

    The maximum federal SSI benefit is $735 a month; some states supplement it; most don't. If approved for SSI in all but 7 states you would automatically be entitled to Medicaid. In those 7 states you would have to file a separate application for Medicaid at the county welfare office.
