There was the Bush/Gore thing finally being settled. Dale Earnhart Sr(one of the biggest names in NASCAR at the time) died at the end of the Daytona 500 and had it not been for 9/11 these would have likely been the biggest stories of 2001 in the US(and that's just starting the year). The funny thing is at the time we thought the nation was really divided politically because of what happened in the 2000 election. It was no where near as bad as it is now.

Well, NASA were in the middle of a major two-man voyage to Jupiter all because of that monolith thing that was found on the Moon a couple of years ago. Unfortunately the onboard computer went a bit wonky and things went south but, hey, they tried.
