A circular swimming pool with a radius of 14 ft is surrounded by
a deck with width y feet. Write and simplify an expression for
the total area of the pool and the deck. Use 22/7 for pi.

radius of circle = 14/2 = 7 ft
radius of total area = (7+y) ft
total area = π(7+y)² = π(y² + 14y + 49)
= (22/7)y² + (22/7)14y + (22/7)49
= (22/7)y² + 44y + 154 ft²

It's really pretty simple, Sally. The area of a circle is simply pi times the radius squared. If the radius is 14 ft plus y ft., then the area is equal to
a = (7/22) (14 + y)2

The total radius is 14+y
Just plug that into the formula for area of a circle.
A = πr²
A = π(14+y)²
A = π(196 + 28y + y²)
I'll leave it to you to substitute whatever approximation of π you want to use and then distribute.
