When people say that you need to learn Hebrew and Greek to understand the Bible, are they trying to buy/waste time?
I mean, who is going to go out and spend years or decades studying the ancient texts? It's obvious they just want the problem to go away (biblical inconsistencies or contradictions), and know that hardly anybody is a Hebrew scholar, etc. Seems like a diversion tactic to me.

No its means they are retarded and thinking they can insult you by a lack of knowledge.
You will need to get a PHD in multiple ancient languages, and things like ancient Hebrew with no vowels STILL isn't understood very well, and old old text in low grade Greek are near on impossible to translate.
Its the same as if you wrote a text message in emojii, and submitted it to your school teacher as homework, they would be like WTF is this? and possibly laugh at it. (And that is how classic greek or high greek, looked to how the bible was written in COMMON GREEK ANCIENT HEBREW . Aramaic and even Cyrillic.
When you get your PHD it reads like baby speak, if you manage to read the bible in common greek you will put it down as a kids book almost immediately as it is seriously retarded. That is why no biblical scholar makes it publically available in original text that people can read.
Great hilarious phrases such as "using chickens to cure ailments" But what the original text ACTUALLY says is
ἀλεκτρυών
which correctly translates as go in and have sex with her like a chicken to cure her.
In 17th century it became use a chicken to make her well. As language changed.
I'm not joking either, so next time they tell you to learn greek point out if you did the bible would be hilarious and filthy and full of greek mythology of aphrodite and roosters.
Other more correct translations about the fig tree, thats written in common greek of the time, it translates as:
Jesus wanted some sex, in the distance he saw a female, but she was not having any of it, and wouldn't give him any, so he cursed her to never have children.
12th century translation, became the fig tree, which made no bloody sense at all. (because it was a wrong translation of common greek) Now you understand why adam and eve used FIG leaves in the bible to cover themselves - see makes sense!!! now you know.
So now you can have a lot of fun bashing people who say you dont know the language, and point out the REAL translations, make it sound more retarded than they can possibly imagine.

you don't need to know how to translate Hebrew and Greek there is a strong's concordance that has it already translated for you you can look up a word in either the Old Testament Hebrew or the New Testament Greek and it will give you an # to look up in the Hebrew text to translate the word. you have to see it to believe it you can know what was meant by the words that were used. Thanks for the question friend God bless.

All preachers learn it. The reason they say this is so you will read the Bible for yourself rather than go by what your preacher said. For example, read Psalms. The interpretation is it's an allegory for Christ's love of His church. Just read it in you King James. It an argument between the ladies in a harem. "My skin is dark, but I'll be in his bed tonight..." Read it in English and we'll be happy.
