87 to 97 Jeep 4.0 conversion, the 97 transmission output shaft is about an inch too long, can I cut the shaft, to fit?
I have almost successfully matched up an 87 jeep 4.0 engine, in a 97 jeep, accept, the transmission the 87 used, was the AX4, and the transmission output shaft is about an inch shorter than the 97 AX15, can I cut the shaft to fit? Please tell me someone has done this before. So far, everything else has fit on this 4.0, hopefully, I don't have to get an 87 AX4, or 5. Thank you for your answers.
I got it running, it runs like a champ, now I just have to figure out, why it's not going into gear.....

That's not your problem, If you cut the shaft, you'll have all sorts of them though. The pilot shafts have different diameters. The '87 is smaller than the '97 so the '97 won't fit into the pilot bearing in the older crank shaft. You can get a replacement bushing and bearing that gets pressed into your crank to accept the larger diameter pilot.

If you can weld and balance, go for it. If not, take it to a driveshaft shop to do the work.
