If you get SSI will getting Medicare too effect your SSI benefit?

    No. INCOME affects SSI. Having health insurance doesn't.

    If you get SSI instead of social security you can contact your county welfare office and file a claim to have the state pay your Medicare premiums, copays and deductibles. If you are on SSI you have Medicaid as well. Medicare is your primary insurance; Medicaid secondary.

    In most states when a person who gets SSI become entitled to Medicare the state will automatically cover the premiums, copays and deductibles. Ask your social security office if it is necessary for you to file a claim at welfare about that. It's called QMB "Qualified Medicare Beneficiary."

    Ask the Social Security Administration. They administer both programs.
