I need a Synonym for a "small flame used to light another fire", like a bundle of kindling or the flame of a match. but in a more symbiotic meaning.

If you have an older gas water heater, there is a small flame that burns constantly, which ignites the main flame when hot water is demanded. That flame is called a pilot flame. Same goes for older gas stoves and ovens.
