Can Queen Elizabeth II, (or any queen of the UK) give the title of prince to anyone or only her husband?

I just read that Prince Philip was given the title of Duke of Edinburgh by Queen Elizabeth's father King George VI-though he had been a prince but gave it up to become a British subject-- and then some years later the queen titled him Prince Philip. And Queen Margaret's husband was titled Earl so if Margaret had had a son and daughter what would their titles be? Would the girl be Princess and the boy Earl? I know Princess Anne's husband declined his title so their children-though children of a royal--are called Mr. or Miss (which seems unfair to me).

She gives the title to anyone, but is not likely to give it to anyone who isn't family. Prince Philip was already a European prince, and a descendant of Queen Victoria, so it wasn't exactly controversial. However it is clear that her father stopped short of granting the title, so it was something she did a few years after becoming queen.

Princess Margaret did have children and her son had the title of Viscount Linley. He is now the Earl of Snowdon. Under 'rules' devised by George V, grandchildren of the monarch don't automatically get titles as princes or princesses, but in any event, the reigning monarch decides who get what.

The title prince can only be granted sparingly by a monarch. Most royals are born royal. Philip was born a royal, and as a British citizen as a descendant of the Electress Sophia of Hanover. He chose to become a British citizen and he lost his titles. His father-in-law first made him a royal duke. When Elizabeth had been queen regnant for about ten years, the couple finally came to a decision about Philip's titles. He wanted to be Prince of the United Kingdom. Members of Parliament and courtiers had been mulling over different princely titles but the Queen asked Philip what he wished.

Usually, the spouse of the reigning Queen is a prince, so the granting of a princely title to the male without his own title is not much of a problem. Otherwise, a man would have had to to some extremely exemplary service that did the realm much good to earn a princely title.

    There is precedent on titles.

Women who marry assume titles and styles of their husbands. Men do not. Men must have their own titles. A man who marries the heir to the throne may be made a prince and royal peer. A man who marries a princess may be given an earldom. The man does not have to take the title if he doesn't want one.

Both commoner husbands of Princess Anne refused titles, with Anne's blessing. Anne got what she wanted--this is fair. She wanted to be HRH, the Princess Anne, the Mrs. Mark Phillips. She wanted her children not to be titled in order that they lead private lives.

Princess Margaret is known to have two children---she and husband, Antony, Earl Snowdon, Viscount Linely had a son, David, who bore the title next down of his father, Viscount Linley. The daughter was Lady Sarah.

David assumed the Earldom of Snowdon when his father died.

The Prince/Princess title is INHERITED. Philip was a Prince in any case. Princess Anne decided not to 'lumber' her children with their royal titles (through her) so they don't use Prince/Princess.

The direct heirs in line of succession to the reigning monarch (whether King or Queen) are titled Prince or Princess. Charles and William and Harry all all titled Prince, however, William is also Duke of Cambridge, his and Kate's children are titled prince and princess because they are in the line of succession. Prince Harry is still prince and it is the Queen's priviledge to bestow another title on him - usually on the marriage date they get another title. Price Philip was called Prince because he could not be King as he was not in the line of succession, but married to the Queen had to have a title.

She can give it to anyone if she chooses. For example, she decreed that Prince William's children would be princes and princesses while she was still alive, even though the great-grandchildren of monarchs normally do not get royal titles.

In general, however, the number of royal titles is kept relatively low.

Margaret had two children. Since titles in the UK normally descend from the father, not the mother, unless the mother is the monarch or heir to the throne, Margaret's children bore the titles of an earl's offspring. They were David Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley, and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones.

Viscount Linley recently became the new Earl of Snowdon on the death of his father. His son is now Viscount Linley, and his daughter is Lady Margarita. His sister is now Lady Sarah Chatto, since she is married to Daniel Chatto.
