I found automatic payroll deductions helped prevent me from squandering my earnings on things I didn't really need. Plus my employer provided matching funds. These days, my savings and the company's contributions (plus the Social Security benefits I paid for my entire working life) are the basis of my retirement income.

Another way I've successfully saved money has been to set a special goal for myself (like purchasing a particularly expensive stereo) and then scrimping and saving until I finally had the money to buy it.

I once saw a 20 dollar bill on top of a bridge. It looked like it was going to jump, so I approached it and asked what it was doing. It said that it didn't want to live anymore, so after some talking, I was able to convince it to come down and join me for dinner.

Nicest 20 dollar bill I've had the pleasure of meeting.

I have started to settle for cheap street hookers instead of high priced call girls.

The horrible rash on my genitalia is unrelated to my decision.

Hard work and careful purchasing. Avoiding credit wherever possible with the exception of interest free cards.
