Does this sound like schizophrenia, another mental illness, or am I just a hypochondriac?
I'm 21, and for the past few years I've had a number of symptoms that I've recently read are possible indications of schizophrenia. Yes, I know I should see a psychologist to be safe but want your opinions. Anyway, first off, for years I have seen things that aren't there, primarily at night when alone but also during the day. Typically they are some sort of shadow monsters slowly peeking around doors and corners. I rarely hear voices, but when I do they are either growls or warnings, such as stay away from windows(I immediately think someone will shoot me). I always assumed it was just my imagination being unhinged, which I guess it is. Even though I know it's all in my head, it feels so real when they occur. Also, I rarely show emotion or even feel much, other than anger which can be random. I spend most of my time alone, and when I see other people I occasionally picture them coming after me.

Yes. I have schizophrenia. You sound paranoid and delusional, and have low level auditory hallucinations. Mine got much worse than that, and probably will worsen in time.

That doesn't just "sound" like schizophrenia. (What does schizophrenia "sound" like anyway) that IS schizophrenia

I don't know,it could be an of those things but the best thing is to just get it checked out by a doctor

There are many different types of schizophrenia (not so much used nowadays), paranoid, catatonic etc.
Suffering from visual and auditory hallucinations is a symptom of schizophrenia and what you are describing sounds like you should definitely go to your Doctor. They can be very understanding about mental health disorders. I wish you all the best!

While seeing a psychologist would probably suffice, you need to see a psychiatrist to be sure. Psychiatrists are physicians.
Usually audial hallucinations are predominant, but it is possible to have visual hallucinations more than audial ones.
What youdescribe sounds like schizophrenia...kind of. The paranoia fits, as do the other hallucinations.
Visual hallucinations can occur and DO occur outside of schizophrenia. Take me, for instance, I have visual hallucinations every day multiple times a day, but I am not schizophrenic. I had a normal life until I was hospitalized for organ failure, which resulted in my blindness and as my vision healed, my visual hallucinations.
I know exactlywhat you are talking about, which is uncommon. Most psychologists' knowledge of hallucination is wrote and inexperienced.
Your other hallucinations do fit the bill for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is not a death sentence; not treating it effectively IS.
You need to talk to a doctor.
Source(s): Your doctor will refer you to another doctor, a psychiatrist, for testing and possible diagnoses. The psychiatrist will then determine the best course of treatment. THERE IS NO CURE. Don't expect a perfect life. Weigh the positive side-effects against the negative side-effects. In everything. You've been a kid your whole life. The rest isn't going to be as sheltered. Luck. - Anonymous4 years ago
See a doctor no one here can diagnose and treat you.
