Speech punctuation in US?

I have always punctuated speech like this -- "Yes," he said.

BUT my friend from the US insists the American way to do it is -- "Yes." He said.

I have searched the Internet for the answer to this, so I can send her a link to prove I'm right - or admit I don't know it all - but all I can find is punctuation my way. Before I start getting cocky, is there any truth in what she claims?

Tell your friend, "Go back to school." Oh, wait - it didn't do any good the first time.

There are two units: 'yes' and 'he said'. We indicate they are separate with a comma, just as in:

In the morning, I went to school.

    "Yes", he said.
