Anyone know how strong papyrus rope was? The tensile strength of ancient rope.?

    I don't know numerical values, but I do know that when wet, it was sufficient to hold together the large Egyptian ships that are often mislabeled as barges. These ships used only rope to hold them together, no glue or nails.

    You should have googled 'papyrus fiber rope strength'.

    They tested it and found it comparable to palm fiber rope, able to hold up to 5 tons. The pdf page (above) details how many strands were in it, from rope they found in an underground quarry. Interesting reading.
