Do you think my uncle tries to change his personality on purpose when his brother in law is around?

I have noticed that my uncle acts different when his sister's husband is around (my aunt and my uncle through marriage). Both their names are Joseph and both go by Joe. My aunts husband Joe is very gruff and strict. My uncle Joe (through blood) is normally laid back and happy, but when he is around my aunt's Joe, he acts grumpy and quiet. Its like his personality changes so that my aunt's husband will approve of him. Do you think he is sucking up just because they have the same name? Do people change their personality around other people just so they will approve? Do you think he wants him to think all Joe's are stern and grumpy and not pushovers?

I think your blood uncle Joe is trying not to piss off his sister, so he can keep peace in the family.  Not a bad idea.

I don't think it has anything to do with the name similarity, especially with such a common name as Joseph.

It's more likely to be a personality issue.  They probably just don't like each other for one reason or another, but they're trying to avoid open conflict.

In any case, it would be very unmannerly of you to get involved in this situation.  They're handling it as best they can, and you have no way of knowing the full background.  Leave it alone.
