can someone explain to me why a different arrow made it through?
ok i admit i was bored. so i did some ballistic "testing" with a helmet.
150 lbs field and hunting tip
22lr remmington hollow point out of a pistol and a rifle.
To make a long story short both the pistol and the field tip failed
to penetrate. but the rifle and the hunting tip did penetrate.
ok i get it for the rifle (higher speed because of the longer barrel)
but the crossbow?

Rifle fires the bullet at a much faster rate of speed than the pistol.
Same with the crossbow. The crossbow also has an advantage that all that force is focused on the tiny tip of the arrow, compared to the larger tip of the bullet. I bet if you repeated the test with the crossbow, but instead used a bolt with a flat tip, it wouldn't penetrate the helmet.

As I understand this, the bow on a crossbow is much shorter than a typical bow and arrow setup.
Thus it requires more force to pull back the bow.
This means that the bow stores more energy when it's released and therefore can go further with more force.
So it's the same answer as with the guns really, just for a different reason.
