President Lincoln issued the "Emancipation Proclamation" which freed the slaves. I suggest you read the "Emancipation Proclamation" as it is a masterpiece of writing.

Yes, the Civil War wasn't about slaves at all. They were just fighting for no reason.

The South seceded to protect slavery. The North wasnt, initially, unified in wanting to do away with it.
