uk drivers: What's with the passive aggressive attitude?
I'm a new driver but I don't understand these people, please give me an explanation, why do most people:
-insist on keeping barely 3-5 meter gap between cars, even when at very high speeds on the motorway. No point, they're not gonna arrive any faster (maybe a few seconds)
-insist on driving above the speed limit and immediately honk and overtake anyone who drives under (i.e. me)
-I use P plates today since I had a very long drive from far away and I'm new. The majority of people wanted to overtake me. I was doing 70 on a motorway, straight line for 100 km, what's their problem? A few times idiots flash me to tell me I need to get out of the lane. WTF? Who do THEY think they are? And they give me very dirty look. What's their problem?!

First, do you know how accurate your speedometer is?
By law, your speedometer is allowed to read up to 10% over the true speed, but no less.
Therefore if your speedometer reads 70mph you are travelling at somewhere between 63mph and 70 mph, and without checking against another reference you cannot be sure where in that range it is. We have two cars in our household. When comparing the speed on the speedometer with that shown on a sat-nav, one of them shows 69mph on the sat-nav with 70mph on the speedometer, while the other shows 64mph on the sat-nav with 70mph on the speedometer. When driving that car I get tailgated much more, simply because if I stick to the limit as shown on the speedometer, I'll be travelling a few mph below the limit as shown on other drivers' speedometers.
The other issue is driving in an outside lane when not overtaking. It is not your responsibility to keep other drivers within the speed limit by driving at 70mph in the outside lane. It is your responsibility to keep left whenever possible, and let the other driver risk their licence by driving over the limit if they wish to. You could be prosecuted for not returning to the left lane (although it is unlikely).
I suspect the 'P' plates are part of the issue - you are highlighting your inexperience to other drivers, who then have less respect for your driving ability. Remove the 'P' plates and you may find the tailgating reduces.

Hi so let me explain something here sunshine the nearside lane is the driving lane the next lane to your right is the overtaking lane. the extreme outside lane is for emergency overtaking only. not for some dumbass to sit in at 70 mph. so time to learn how to respect the motorway driving so a police car can get to an accident ahead you need not to be in his way or a doctor on call.

Because they are idiots with little regard for the life of others and the law, since it is illegal and is dangerous driving. I'd suggest getting a rear-facing dashcam so you can catch them, especially if they cause an accident.
Brake-checking is not advised as you could be liable for causing the accident.

" A few times idiots flash me to tell me I need to get out of the lane"
Sounds like you're cruising in the middle or outside lane. This is actually illegal. So you get flashed by people going faster. Who's the idiot?
