Husky is very picky but loves veggies!?

I m one of those people who believe dogs are carnivores, no questions asked! And I usually feed my dogs a raw diet... until I got a picky eating husky. All my other dogs LOVE their raw diet and yes I do include a few veggies in there but my husky only ate the organs and veggies. So I have been trying her on various other diets like dog food, kibble and moist and she won t touch it. One day as I was cooking I dropped a tomato slice and gobbled it up like crazy. Since then, I ve been offering her more veggies then anything else and is eating it like a champ, but had also made her gassy. Poops like fine, only greener. My concern is, what if she isn t getting all the nutrience she needs? She won t eat bone or muscle meat. She also won t eat dairy products so I m worried about calcium definicieny. Can anyone tell me if this is something I should worr about with my vegetarian by dog choice husky? Is supplements a good idea? I ve heard of people adding supplements and getting too much of a good thing and harming their dogs using it. Anyone have any experience with this at all?

Healthy dogs are not picky unless their owners make them that way. Nor will any healthy dog intentionally starve themselves if they are fed properly. Obviously you're not feeding her properly, "trying her on various other diets", frequent diet changes can cause intestinal upset, all diet changes should also be done gradually over a period of ten days to two weeks, dogs don't need variety, once you find a diet that works for him stick with it for the remainder of his life, unless a vet recommends a change due to medical issues, no supplements either unless vet recommended.

If the diet is nutritionally complete/balanced specifically formulated for a dog, there is no need to change it at all, or supplementation. She will eat when she gets hungry enough if you don't feed anything else, this may take 3-4 days, if you don't cave in, they should be fed on a set schedule, twice daily, am/pm, no free feeding, other than water which should be accessible 24/7.

Most dogs are lactose intolerant and should not be fed dairy products at all or only in small amounts only occasionally.

Dogs are CARNIVORES and can't not exist on vegetables. They also can't exist on just organ meats if fed raw. They NEED meat and bone.

Switch your dog back to a quality grain free dog food before it ends up dead from malnutrition. How effing stupid are you? Vegetables provide ZERO nutrition to dogs.

Dogs are carnivores. (YOU KNOW that). Therefore...DO explain HOW your dog is getting adequate or balanced nutrition like: protein, calcium = or ANYTHING it needs, from a veggie diet? Veggies have: virtually no calories, no protein, NO calcium. Dogs cannot handle veggies or digest plant cellulose UNLESS it is: steamed, previously frozen, pureed or fermented. Have you done at least one of those to the veggies she IS getting? If she is gassy (I suspect NOT.)

As we tell ALL dog owners: picky eaters are MADE. If she got no OTHER food but her REGULAR balanced "raw" diet she would (EVENTUALLY) EAT IT. But (INSTEAD) you are caving in to canine "MANIPULATION" and have done so..... REPEATEDLY. BTW, a raw diet of primarily ORGAN MEAT is totally INAPPROPRIATE. Organs should comprise ONLY 5-10% of a raw diet.

Get a meat grinder from Northern TOOL and "grind up" her muscle meat & her bone (or in place of the bone) add nutritional bone meal (or egg shells) & puree her veggies. Feed her the mixed SLOP and..... see how it goes. Vary your meat going from chicken/turkey, to beef to fish, and during hunting season add: venison or rabbit, and squirrel if possible. Most Nordic breeds prefer a largely fish diet, btw. She does not NEED dairy if she gets: her calcium source as: bone, egg shells or bone meal powder (added to the slop).

  • Take her to an animal nutritionist and ask them
