Why don't leaders lead, but serve?

My religion teacher told me today that leaders don't lead, but they serve. I understand the whole serving part, but why don't leaders lead?

They do; by example. Leading by example is a lost art in modern times. It's all about

"me" these days. There was a time (and those times still exist for branches of the military) when leaders used stand in front of the troops, the implication was "follow me." Now, it's 'lead from behind"...what ever that is. The implication being, "I won't risk myself, but I'm ordering you to risk yourself."

leaders lead, but their goal is to please these special interest groups that hardly reflect American values.
