In Indiana, the renewal is every year. The renewal is based on your last name, and the month due. My last name is an (A), so renew in February, so, if I were to buy another car today in October, then I would pay a pro-rated amount (less) and then have the normal renewal (full price) in February.
They also split off the dates due in the month. Mine is due by Feb 7, others could be the 15th or the 22 nd, which coincides with the 2nd/3rd letter of your last name. This way, with the split, don’t have a mass amount of people all trying to renew by the end of the month.
I “think” the last month for someone with a last name of XYX is either August or September. So when you get your new plates, will see (what) month you will need to renew in 2018.

"Indiana residents must renew their registration every year with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Keeping your registration current means that you can continue to operate your vehicle legally in the state."

As often as the law in Indiana says you have to, no more and no less.

In most states, you renew your registration (represented by the plates on your car) annually. The plates are not typically replaced since your new registration is based on the same plate number every year.

As often as the state requires. You have stickers on the plate, one for the month and one for the year. Your registration paperwork has an expiration date on it.

In NY, you don't need to renew them. You renew your cars registration(yearly), and you renew your license(every 4 years), but the plates stay on the car. When you get a new car, you transfer the plates to the new car. Don't worry, the DMV will tell you if you need to change your license plates.
