Why does The Midwest have such a high suicide rate? https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6345a10.htm?

Update 2:

I have misidentified how far the Midwest extends. Rephrase the subject of my this to the "noncoastal west and western part of the Midwest". Is that sufficiently accurate?

I don't think there is a single reason but you're right there has to be something going on. I suggest it is a few factors together. First at least 6 of those states have some of the loosest gun ownership and conceal carry laws in the country: For example, Wyoming, Arizona, Oklahoma and Montana that I know of for sure. Then you have some of those states with cold winters and lower amounts of sunlight in winter which can lead to a higher suicide rate which has been shown to increase with greater gun ownership. Opioid addiction problems contribute as well, for example in Washington and Utah that I know of. Washington coast gets a lot of rain which contributes to an increased suicide rate as well.
