My LDR ended and I don't know why?

My long distance boyfriend and I have been together for five months. Everything was great. It was perfect. He was always so happy to see me online and would spend the whole day with me and we would be diabetically adorable.

Then after he got home from work yesterday he asked me for a video call (not our first). As soon as I answered and he saw my face he got the happiest look on his face and his eyes welled up with love. Nobody has ever looked at me like that and I felt so special.

He said he loves me so much and even went as far as saying he could see us getting married someday after we meet in real life. But... until we meet he just can't handle the distance anymore... and he broke up with me.

Today was the first time I woke up with no cute, lovey texts. The first time he didn't message or call before he had to go into work. The first time he didn't message me as soon as he got home. The first time he didn't tell me he loves me. The first time he didn't message me til he passed out...

I feel like a huge part of me died and I feel so unbelievably broken.

I just don't understand what happened. We were so happy. We gave our "cringelovers" friends a run for their money of being the most adorable couple. He's everything I've ever wanted and it's my first time legit being happy in a relationship in 12 years.

I don't understand what is going on that makes him feel like it's worth it to break my heart.

Update:

oh, also we've been planning on meeting in real life over the holidays. That's not going to work out so it changed to spring time. We both want to meet so badly... I don't understand why he'd break it off until we meet when we already have plans in the making?

Update 2:

Also yes, it's a long distance relationship. It is mostly online. But it's 2017. If you can accept 100 different sexualities, please be open to the fact that more and more people every year get into LDR's. I don't need warnings to be careful. I just want to know what happened. ;-;

Update 3:

people, please. I am asking a specific question and nobody's even tried to answer it. Yes- people are different online than in person. Yes, there's a chance we may not even get along in person. This is common knowledge. I've been meeting up with people I met online for like five years. Two of my LDR's have turned into real life relationships where we lived together.

Please don't focus on how unconventional my situation is. Please just hear how lost and confused I am and help me understand.

You need to understand that long distance relationships do not last unless two people have the resources to spend in-person time together, getting to know each other. You can't "know" someone online. People are completely different in person, believe me, they are. It's not perfect unless you like to go through life living a fantasy. And long distance relationships are frustrating because there you are, staring at someone through a monitor or phone, who you'll likely never meet or touch, and more

And we can't "love" someone we never met. Not truly -- again, you're emotionally attached. This isn't love.

I'm sure there are a lot of guys in your town. Maybe try one of those.

Too easy to break an LDR online. So much better to know the person up close.

What do you mean "diabetically adorable," You mean you are both diabetics? I don't think that is even a word.

Anyway how can you possible get yourself so bent up over somebody you haven't really met?

Please be very careful. The internet and social media is FULL of people pretending to be who they aren't. Though you are hurt by this loss don't let it deter you from finding a make friend you can be with, not just chat with.
