If a guy asks a girl out for drinks is it a date?

So I was at work on the ship and I was serving food and this guy told me what he wanted to eat. So while I was putting his food on his plate he was staring at me and said that he remembered me from high school ( I didn’t remember him though). Then a few days later after work, I was cleaning up and then he saw me and said “did you graduate in...2016” then I said yes and I asked him when he graduated and he said in 2015. Then I told him that I didn’t remember him and he said “well I remember you. You looked so familiar.” Then he asked me “do you stay in the barracks?” Then I said that I don’t live on the ship and that I was in a squadron. Then he said “ oh man. I would ask you out for drinks but you won’t be here”. Then I laughed it off and said “drink what?” Then he said “water” I guess he was trying to be funny lol.
