English derives from a number of other languages. We have a choice. The French construction is "Many students like to ride a bicycle to school" (one each). The German construction is "Many students like to ride bicycles to school" (more than one in total). If you use the first construction, you must include the indefinite article.

"a bicycle" or "bicycles" or "their bicycles". Use "the" when something has been referred to previously.
"Sam got a new bicycle for Christmas, but the bicycle was stolen in January."

To be clear:
Many students like to ride a bicycle to school,
... It's quite difficult for any student to ride more than one bicycle at a time.
