How to build strength?

Before push ups, how can I gain the strength and stamina to do air of push ups? I'm not out of shape or over weight, but I'm not very strong on the top half of my body.

I've tried doing push ups, but I can barey get 1 done before my arms give in. Is there any other way to build up strength without equipment?

    Seriously this one is easy.

Do 1 or 2 if you can. Then just do the down part, you know- a slow controlled descent and repeat this often even if you can't push back up.

You will increase the amount of whole pushups by like 4 or 5 a week.

By the way, this is the same idea when starting chin ups. Use a chair and do the slow down part until you can pull up more often.

First, watch some videos and make sure you have proper form. If that's not the problem, then try knee push ups. Do as many regular push ups as you can, and then finish your set with knee push ups. Eventually you will be able to do more and more regular push ups. You can also try doing push ups on an incline using a couch or bench, anything sturdy enough to hold you. Doing planks can help too.
