HELP What makes it one-one??!! Enter Yes or No in each answer space below to indicate whether the corresponding function is one-to-one.?

What makes it one-one?

I'm pretty sure it has to deal with the horizontal and vertical line test but I'm not sure?

Can someone explain this to me please!!??

Thanks

A one-to-one function does not cross any horizontal line twice.

    (1) sqrt(x) is one-to-one, because you can't have two different numbers with the same square root.

    (2) 7x - 3 is one-to-one; it is a straight, steep line.

    (3) |x - 1| is not one-to-one, because (for example) f(3) = f(-1), and f(1/2) = f(3/2).

    (4) x^3 + 1 is one-to-one; it never turns back on itself.
