Question about a neighbors dog pooping in my yard.?
Okay so this is the situation. I am from Minnesota, so I'm wondering if there are any laws prohibiting people from letting their dogs poop in people's yard. I own my property and so does the neighbors in question. I asked them once to keep their dogs out of our yard, because they poop in my yard and dig holes after a poop. I want to call the cops on them at this point because it's like a slap in my face to keep letting their dogs off a leash to just roam and poop anywhere they want. I was a dog owner and I never let my dogs poop in other people's yard and picked it up if they did. Should I call my local police station to see how to move forward? I feel like asking the neighbors this again will not stop anything. So any advice or knowledge of Minnesota law in this situation would be helpful. Thank you.

This is not a POLICE matter. POLICE cannot do anything about it. It is not their job. You call Animal Control when you see the dog out wandering the neighborhood. Animal Control has control over all animals. Dogs, cats, exotics, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs .....
The best & most logical thing to do is to install a fence to keep dogs off your property.
I would wait & watch when the dog is in your yard run out the door like a maniac screaming & waving your arms, telling it to get out of your yard. Gather up a pile of rocks & throw rocks at it to chase it away. You could lace pieces of raw meat with chili & throw it out in the yard. The chili will burn the dogs mouth & when it runs home, owners won't have a clue as to what is wrong with their dog. The chili won't hurt the dog & it doesn't burn for ever.
I think a fence is your best resort.

Trespassing on private property with or without a dog is is a crime, common courtesy/respect is to clean up after your dog, and is now the law in a public venue, and in most areas.
It's also against the law to have a dog at large, unleashed and not under the owners control at all times, report it to the local animal control.
Police do not get involve in these matters, unless someone is actually being attacked by a dog. As for specifics on Minnesota laws that's something you can use a search engine for yourself.

I'm in Pennsylvania so I do not know the laws in Minnesota. You can find details of such laws on a website like this one that is an official state website, which I'm not sure this site is official but it looks like it is:
https://www.animallaw.info/statutes/us/minnesota
In Pennsylvania it is illegal, no matter what, to allow a dog off the leash in public unless it's in a dog park or something that has specific rules allowing it.
I've lived in different states and have always had bull breed dogs. Unfortunately Minnesota wasn't one of them that I lived in so like I said I'm not aware of the specifics of Minnesota dog laws. Every state that I have lived in has had a law that requires the owner to pick up after their dogs business. Both in public and on private property. It must be picked up immediately.
You can call police. Either they will attempt to take care of it or they will suggest you either call Animal Control or the city code officer.
I love dogs but that would annoy me too

You have a right not to having your neighbours dog poo in your yard and they should not allow their dog to roam free. Not fair on all the neighbours and the dog as it will be at risk or hazards likes cars. Is there a leash law were you live. Probably is as in most States dogs either have to be leash or keep under owners control which this dog obviously isn't. If you do decide to report the owners you need to get proof of the dog on your property so get video evidence if possible.

First call the police non-emergency number, and find out what the laws are in your area. They can tell you how best to proceed. Even when we had dogs, I find it disgusting to need to clean up someone else's dog crap. The back yards were always fenced, the front ones not. It's great for the neighbor - they don't have to clean it up! Investigate the cost of a fence, it may well be worth it. It keeps dogs OUT of your yard, and the kids inside. Another option is to ask the neighbor to keep the dogs out of your yard (once you know the laws). If they refuse, put the poo in a bag and take it to them, and ask them again, and say you will have no choice but to contact the authorities. It's their choice at that point - they can be responsible people and keep the dogs in their own yard, or face a fine.

I understand how you feel, but also if possible its best to try and get along with neighbours or it can turn into a living nightmare.
Why not just put up a cheap and high, wire fence between you and your neighbours property and so stop any dogs getting on your land.
You could even suggest to them that they pay half towards the cost of the fence.
I know its really up to them to keep their dogs from wandering off their yard but for harmonies sake, try and solve this problem amicably, as it makes sense.
To call the authorities on your neighbour is going to generate really bad feelings which may escalate and make life awkward. Jmo.

If you have politely asked these people not to let their dog roam, let alone mess on your property, then it's time to call in the relevant authorities where you are. They'd been given 'fair warning'!!
