CCA car battery?

Is there anything fairly inexpensive where the average Joe can test the CCA of his car battery?

Now that I use synthetic motor oil I don't see the dealer for oil changes as often to have the battery tested.

Thanks

They test them at many car parts stores for free.

Generally the battery will show if it is in trouble by the starter motor sounding a little slow and as if it is labouring. I don't think they can actually tell how many CCAs the battery is capable of putting out but can test the battery under load to see if it should still be capable of turning over the motor properly so the car will start. Generally testing batteries is done when you are having difficulties starting the engine to see if the battery is weak.

Many local auto parts stores will be happy to test your battery and electrical system for you. Go talk to the friendly people at Auto Zone or Pep Boys.

Continual testing of a car battery will wear it out very quickly.

If the battery is less than 3 years old it shouldn't need testing.

If the battery starts the car it shouldn't need testing.

If after 3 years the battery fails to start the car, replace it.

Buy a battery tester at a car part store. Read the instructions how to use it.
