Should immigrants assimilate and fit in America or should we accommodate any culture?

When visitors come to visit my house, they play by my rules. When I visit someone else's house, I play by their rules.

They should fit into American western culture when they come to America. And I would attempt to fit into another culture when moving into another country. And I'd start by learning their language.

There is a limit to that rule of thumb however. I would not play by their rules if their rules required that I abandoned my deepest profound beliefs or way of life. For example, if I were Muslim and their rules required that I take off my hijab, I would politely decline. And if they insisted I would leave their house.

There is no point in becoming American if there is no intention of assimilating. NO we should not accommodate every culture on the planet that comes here.

Americans are all cultures all mashed up together. You see it in the food.

I like it when different cultures maintain little cultural centers. I can't count how many incredible "China towns" or "Little Italy's" I've visited. I've visited my ancestors' Czech village in Cedar Rapids and the Belgian Village in Green Bay. We would be such a dull country if we didn't have those other cultures?

Assimilation has always been multigenerational. My grandmother was somewhat assimilated. My mother an father more so but still somewhat parochial. My siblings, my cousins and myself are all fully assimilated.
