Is Targeting The Cartoid Sinus Legal In MMA?

Years ago when I studied Tai Chi my teacher told me in Tai Chi you are taught a number techniques that are very dangerous and not allowed in ring competition. They were, eye pokes or gouges, cupping the hand and hitting the ear to burst the ear drum, throat strikes, base of the skull strikes, and some others I cant recall. Groin hits and kicks are also dangerous but were legal. You should only fight if you have to - always run away - but if you have to fight then anything goes. You may or may not win but if its you or the other person then its better off you. I was speaking to an acquaintance into MMA and he confirmed those techniques are out - just as I was told - except one - Cartoid Sinus strikes. I was surprised - if done right your opponent goes down but its dangerous - even death can result. I would have thought it was banned.

Most of those examples are actually legal. Cupping the hand and striking the ear is legal, throat punches are legal, only striking the back of the head is illegal and it wasn’t in the earlier days of the UFC. The original UFC rules only included no groin strikes, no biting, and no eye gouges. State sanctioning added many rules from boxing years later. Striking the carotid sinus is also legal. Most techniques people believe are too dangerous actually aren’t very likely to cause permanent damage. If you think about it, the most dangerous techniques in martial arts are chokes. While many strikes could potentially cause death, chokes are guaranteed to kill if you hold them too long. Still totally legal in MMA. The idea of an MMA fight is to determine who is the most technically skilled. Eye pokes and groin strikes aren’t necessary to determine this. The best fighters around can win fights with enough self control to do it without maiming or killing.

So I think a lot of traditional arts hide behind the whole we are too dangerous to use in the ring excuse. But try to review how many % of the techniques in your style would actually be illegal in mma or other fighting rings. Most of the techniques are completely legal and the art should not be completely made useless through the removal of these few techniques.

Also these techniques are not as 'teh deadly' as they are made out to be. For example the cupping the hand and hitting the ear to burst the ear drum. I had the unfortuate pleasure of being on the receiving end of one of these techniques. So when the ear drum pops we are told that we'll lose our balance, will be in great pain, and etc. So I completely lost my hearing for a week(took few months to fully recover), I couldn't hear a single beep in my left ear. But other than that I didn't have any real damage at the time of the attack. I wasn't in huge pain(only normal smack in the face type of a pain), my balance was not at all altered, and I was able to continue through my spar for few more seconds until I noted the silence in my left ear and requested a break from the spar. Ditto with groin kick. It hurts and it sucks, but you can completely fight through the pain no problem.
