    You're probably thinking of Howard Unruh, a WWII vet who, in 1949 (not 48), killed 13 people and wounded 3 in his Camden NJ neighborhood. He is regarded as one of the first spree killers in modern America.

    Chillingly, the granddaughter of one of the survivors of Unruhs massacre was present at the recent high school shooting in Florida.
