Why are the critics so out of touch with the general public reviews when it comes to Star Wars the last Jedi?

What’s gone wrong

Critics exist in a bit of a privelaged position.

They get free stuff, movie access, etc, and so do the mainstream organisations they work for.

As a result, they have to keep studios sweet, which means never giving bad reviews.

On the other hand, they are also treading a fine line of trying not to "offend" readers, and so try to write reviews that are extremely nuetral or always positive so that they don't get accused of something because of who is in the film.

Seriously, I wrote a paragraph on my Facebook page about how I didn't really enjoy Black Panther very much (because of poor writing and a predictable plot) and got called a racist for it. I never mentioned skin colour once, but was still accused.

Thats the line critics walk every day.

critics didn't have as much bias, the general public seems to have had lots of biases.

That's not a very good question. People can have different opinions on something, that's fine and normal. To say the critics are "out of touch" is because the critics aren't writing reviews to align with the opinions of the general public.

And i guess to answer your question, critics (not all) view films differently to a general audience member. They look beyond the film itself and at stuff like the music, editing, acting, directing, sound design, cinematography. All that things that a typical audience member (or star wars fan) wouldn't care about (I'm not saying this to be patronizing, some people do look out for that type of thing but not the general audience, when they watch the film they are thinking about how the film is making them feel in that moment). What I'm saying is that critics will judge it on how good of a film it is and not how good of a star wars film it is. They don't care if the general audience doesn't like a new character, they don't care if the over arching themes of the film don't fit with a typical star wars fan's narrative. They don't care.

The Last Jedi had problems, but parts of it also worked as a film. You shouldn't focus on what the critics think and how it's different from how you think. You shouldn't care. It's just a FILM. Just 2 hours of mindless entertainment. That's all. The critics know it's just a film. They aren't out of touch, you are.

It's because they are out of touch with reality and don't realize how brain dead society has become. I'll bet half the audience was staring at their phones at some point during the movie!
