Why do some people with little education like to put those who have an education down?
This came up the other day when I was conversing with some friends. A friend of a friend of mine started to tell me I spell like I am a teenager. However, this was just on an instant messaging service. He then proceeded to ask me if I even graduated high school. I proudly told him that I am graduating from University this year with a BA in Psychology. He then proceeded to tell me that it's pathetic for me to be 24 years old and still in college. He also kept insisting that a Psychology degree is worthless, despite me telling him I plan on going to grad school. I found out that this guy never went to college as well. So why does this happen on occasion? Yes, I do know it occurs the other way around, but I am focusing on this case. However, I imagine this would apply to both scenarios.

Gotta say that I understand that. Skipped two grades in school and had my BScN at twenty. It took some years if part time study to get my MA in history, and I took a lot of grief for the MA because I already had a career. Screw them, kid. I made a hundred thousand a year for nearly thirty years, not counting iherited money, and when I run into one of the morons who taunted me for using big words it's usually when they are cleaning my pool or delivering my mail.
Jealousy. You're taking psych, so you know the motivation. Dig in, work hard and enjoy having work that matters. When you meet that moron he will be stacking grocies or draining the septic tank at your country place.

Envy - that most destructive of human emotions - is the reason. I had a family member that insisted that everyone that sought a college education were "losers that couldn't decide what they wanted to do". She was quite nasty about this at times. She married an engineer and totally ceased making such comments and, in fact, insisted here children would go to college. The reason for her earlier comments is quite clear.

Why do you let this bother you? For some people, once they see what gets under your skin, they'll keep at it. It's just the way some people are.
Just look at how Trump plays with the media the way he does. It bothers them. Trump likes to bother them, so he keeps doing it. The same thing probably happened here. He saw how offended you became when he started criticizing your intellect and ambition, so he kept doing it.
I have found that if someone is trying to be annoying, the best way to put an end to it is to ignore them.

I can't help but notice that many Libs habitually overestimate themselves , while for some reason believing their degree ( rather than doing something productive with it ) is the end game .

insecurity could be one thing. you are right though, it happens in both situations
about your degree, people don't realize that most people who go into psych, have the intention of going to grad school. the possibilities are endless so it is absolutely not a worthless degree. people don't understand that because no one takes the time to research and learn, they just repeat the bs they hear everyday from other unaware individuals.
