If someone broke into your house and was pointing a gun at your or your kids, would you reach for yours?

No, because if I reached for mine, then the burglar would have to pull the trigger and kill me. By not reaching, I give the burglar the opportunity to steal my stuff and leave without killing anyone.

At that point (a gun is being used to menace your family) it is to late to reach for your gun. You reach for your gun when you hear the intruder trying to break in, and meet him with force.

I don't own a firearm (I live in a country with strict gun control) or any kids, but there are many things in my house which could be used as weapons. I would like to think I would do whatever necessary to protect them. Self-defence is certainly a valid reason for gun ownership.

Chances are they wouldn't have gotten that far due to my dog barking at the person as they approached my house.

I would give him what he wants and then shoot and kill him as he leaves my home.

I wouldn't be stupid enough to have either a gun or kids

No. That isn't a reason to not have a gun in case someone breaks into your house.
