OCG, should people care more about others' insults, or their own abilities?

There will always be people who are considered by some others as "inferior", and they get subjected to negative treatment, ranging from simple name-calling to harassment (or even discrimination and violence).

Nonetheless, do you think it is better for people (of any race and background) to worry or apply others' views of "you are inferior" to themselves?

Or it is better for them to ignore those insults, and focus on whatever they are capable of: their skills, and their hobbies?

This could be a good question about society, since poor self-esteem is a common social problem for a lot of people.

Update:

A certain quote from an Old Norse book, the Havamal, can be relevant:

"Cattle die, kinsmen die, even you yourself will die,

But what will never die is the fame of a man's deeds."

I don't know any individual who would just sit there and allow themselves to starve because someone else insulted them.

But I do know many people who in their leisure time complain about insults they have received.

As far as the larger society- individual insults are not the problem. The problem is when people or systems prevent others from achieving their potential. And in most serious cases people and systems attempting to get in the way of people's survival.

Black women should become butchers and Asian men should become janitors, people should care more about this if they want the best for this world.
