not everyone else, it just seems that way from the people you know, some people might be closer to their dads side

Well I'm more close to my maternal family (mother's side) only because my dad is an only child and my paternal grandfather (dad's dad) died way before I was born and paternal grandmother (dad's mom) died of cancer when I was 4. My dad literally has no immediate family that are still alive, he only has a few cousins and I only met a couple of them once or twice.

Because moms usually get custody by default, and thats huge when divorce rate is over 50%.
My mom got my brother and I, but we didn't get along for most of my life so I'm very close with my dads side.

In my case it was that as my dad is over ten years older than my mum, his side of the family was mostly dead by the time I was old enough to socialise.

Because usually on holidays, the husband will go with his wife to her side of the family's house because it's considered the gentleman thing to do. After doing that every year, you will most likely grow closer to your mom's side, since you're so used to seeing them every holiday and not your dad's family.
