Water damage to my mac - works plugged in?

I spilled water on my mac and after having it dry for four days, it's working. It only works when the battery is charging. When I unplug it, it turns off. I have to restart the date/time when it turns back on. I really only need it for another month or so to finish off the semester - am I damaging it more if I continue to use it like this? I called Apple and they said I should replace the battery but I'm not sure if that's genuine or they just want me to buy a battery. There's no Apple store around me.

    Don't buy a new battery.

Back up anything important to a flash drive, or external hard drive.

Use it plugged in, and hope it lasts to the end of the semester.

My experience with water damage is that, even if it's working now, some corrosion may be spreading inside. You should not count on it working, long term, and should not invest in new parts or repairs.

Water could be inside, and that could cause a short and burn out something in the computer or cause a fire. I had a worse problem. I figured that the disk drive was for sending flat things, so I sent a pizza to my friend (it never got there, and the computer smoked). So, my problem was Mac and cheese.
