$16.00 of which $2.50 is the pickup fee. That means 16 - 2.5 went for mileage. That's 13.5. 13.5 / 1.5 = 9. So the ride was 9 miles.
The formula is m = (t - 2.50)/1.5 where m = miles traveled, t = total cost. Subtract $2.50 from total cost and then divide the remainder by 1.5.

Oh come on, its simple math.
16.00 - 2.50 = the trip fare.
Divide that by 1.5 to get the distance.
