Cashier tips for new fast food worker?

I'm a 17 year old boy that recently got employed at a Jack in the Box (burger place) as a cashier. Up until a few days ago all I did was clean and restock but on Tuesday two team leaders decided it was time to train me to be a cashier. First they brought up a training system that allowed me to mess around with the menu items and overall just get familiar with the cash register. The team leaders showed me how to remove stuff from burgers, how to add additional stuff, how to work with coupons, ebt, and credit cards plus other stuff. I felt extremely uncomfortable the first few times I actually took a customer's order but by the 10th customer i was starting to get the hang of it (sort of).I have to go back on Saturday though and I'm kind of nervous. Would anyone be willing to give me some tips or advice? How should I greet customers? What are some common things that happen while taking an order and how should I adress them? How should I give back money and what should I say after? Anything helps. Thanks

First of all, don't stress out too much! You can pull the "I'm new" card for a while and people will usually be understanding. Some people won't be and they'll be annoyed. Don't worry about them, they're bitter people who probably lead miserable lives, and you will get to serve them all the time. Welcome to the service industry.

One thing I would suggest is reading the order back. You can even say "I want to read this back to you to make sure I got it right" so they understand that you're trying to make sure they get the right thing.

In regards to greeting, I usually just go with a "hi, how are you today?" or something along those lines. A lot of people will answer "how are you?" with their order, so I'll sometimes just ask "hi, what can I get for you?" so I don't get pissed at everyone ignoring my attempt to be polite. Remember to smile. Try to be as positive as you can, overall.

When you read them their total and they hand you money, say "out of ___" as you're ringing it into the register, and when you give them their change back, tell them how much it is (e.g. "___ is your change"). If they're getting a lot of change back, or if there are a lot of bills in general, count it out. To let someone know it's time to them to move, I'll usually say "your food will be ready down at the end" and gesture to where I'm talking about, or "you're all set, have a great day" or something like that. Good luck!

Hold up, EBT is allowed at fast food places? Really? This must be out in California.

Hi, are You ready to place your order? Then if You have questions, and You will, everyone does, ask for help. If You make a mistake relax and learn from it. Even people who have worked for years make mistakes sometimes. Make sure to give them their receipt and say out loud while handing it to them, (for example) And your change is twelve dollars and seventy five cents, or whatever it is, Thank You. Stop worrying most things are learned by repetition.

Remember to never hand over the food until the customer has paid.
