"Any Ideas" ? Yes I have an idea that you should look up the fees on the California DMV website.

The charge by formula and if you call the DMV, they will tell you what the cost is. You pay by vehicle, not by weight.

California doesn't really care what your little truck weighs. What they are concerned about is exhaust emissions. Your vehicle will have to be inspected for compliance with California exhaust emissions (Smog inspection) before it can be registered there. If it doesn't comply, you won't be allowed to keep it.

10% of the purchase price (unless you have proof of sales tax paid to another state). also, burn off some gasoline and take your stuff out of the truck to re-weigh. Getting below 6k lbs will save you $. dmv.ca.gov for fee calculator, how to, forms and to make an appointment

All the fee schedules are published on the DMV website. I'll be happy and go there on your behalf and look it up if you pay me $40 for the time and effort. Paypal accepted.
