Young girl made fun of handicap at my work?

I work at a gas station where I have many regular customers. I have this one fellow who comes in almost daily to buy his mom and dads cigarettes. Last night a young girl and her boyfriend came in and I served her boyfriend. Then the regular customer with the handicap came in. His handicap is that he thinks and speaks slowly and he can’t use his hand very well. The girl started talking about needing to withdrawal some money so the handicap started explaining that scotia bank was just next door. The girl looked at him and said “your just creepy, I don’t want to talk to you, seriously weird man.”

This made me really upset. I told her what she said was completely uncool and I tried explaining to her his issue and she, that little snot, said “I just want to buy some gum”. I took the gum and told her to chew her way out of the store. I could have cared less about making a $1.50 sale, I just wanted her gone.

I’m not sure if this was right to do. It’s was the first time I have ever in my life refused a sale, also my first time ever seeing a customer blantently make fun of another on the spot. Was I right? Or could I have done something different? What would you have done?

    Hello LunaSky,

    Well done.

This immature idiot deserved what she got.

I would have also said that she should be thankful she doesn't have a disability or that any of her family and friends don't either.

You did the right thing! Also better she starts learning now because people get killed over that kind of behavior!

HI what you should have said to her was only by the grace of god she is like she is. also if one night her head has a collision with a hard object she could be worse.

    It should have been reported.

" I told her what she said was completely uncool and I tried explaining to her his issue "

    Not your job

" that little snot, said “I just want to buy some gum”. I took the gum and told her to chew her way out of the store. "

I hope your boss shares your beliefs. No offense intended, but if you're working at a gas station, chances are you're not going to have a lot of job security.

"I’m not sure if this was right to do."

Unless they were breaking store policy or a law, it probably wasn't

"It’s was the first time I have ever in my life refused a sale,"

    okay

"also my first time ever seeing a customer blantently make fun of another on the spot."

When I worked retail (years ago), it happened rarely.

" Was I right? Or could I have done something different? What would you have done?"

I probably would've kept my mouth shut, particularly if I knew I needed the job.

I wouldn't have explained anything to her and just told her to get out. You do NOT have to provide service to her if you don't want to.

you DID do the right thing, WELL DONE, YOU ARE a great example for others, again well done. take care

  • I applaud you for standing up for him. It was really his place and only his place to describe his disability. It would have been sufficient for you to say we don't allow people to disrespect other customers in our store, please leave. Please don't refer to him as a handicap, he is a person, a man.

On one hand you did what any compassionate human would do. On the other hand.from a business stand point you didn't take care of a customer even if it was just a 1.50. But if I had the choice I would have done exactly what you did.

You didn’t need to explain the man’s handicap. That wasn’t up to you.

But to take a stand was appropriate.

You could of said This gentleman is one of our regulars and he was most certainly not being weird or creepy.

I probably would of then turn my attention to him and ask what can I get you? And ignore the girl.

But to turn away her sale was fine to do.
