Why is it so difficult for me to wake up in the morning? Never had this issue before.?

I’ve been a morning person my entire life always up by 6am but more typically up at 4am even on weekends. My preferred bedtime is 7pm. Now for the last few months my job has forced me to get to bed at 11pm! But instead of waking after eight full hours of sleep at 7am it’s been impossible to get out of bed until 10 or sometimes 11am!

What is going on? It’s been eight weeks. When the alarm goes off it’s like having a fever dream I am totally out of it. I’m getting way too much sleep and missing out on the most important part of my day. I am working to get out of this nightmare job but it will be at least seven more months of this... Help!!

Schedule an appointment with your family doctor. When the doctor asks what brings you in today show them what you have written here. Use that as a basis for having a frank discussion on how you are doing. They can do a full physical and neurological workup to see if have a medical condition that needs to be addressed. They can also check if anything you are taking or doing may be causing or contributing to your issue. They can refer you to a sleep specialist for a sleep study. Your family doctor can refer you to a mental health professional who can evaluate your mental state. Be sure to show them what you have written here also. Once a diagnosis has been made, treatment options can be discussed.

shift work, with their later starting times, screwing up sleep patterns since it was invented.......try the best you can, to deal with it, ear plugs or fans to mask the noises of the outside world, dark curtains who block the sunshine disturbing sleep.......perhaps, you need to adjust your sleep times from what it used to be ........best wishes dealing with it......

You really need to see your G.P to rule out things like thyroid problems. They'll be able to help you better than we can here.

When you sleep does matter a lot; it's not just a matter of the number of hours. Sleeping from 7 PM to 4 AM is quite different from sleeping from 11 PM to 8 AM. It's because of the body's circadian rhythms, and going to bed at 11 PM is obviously disturbing yours.
