    Yes you can help her,

Coughing is the body's natural effort to remove mucus out of the lungs and throat.

Here you should not make anything to stop this natural process, instead you should

the body in doing its job to ease.

Give your mom, hot water to drink,

Give her steam breathing inhaler, that will help the body

to bring out the mucus easily. Do this for 3 or 4 days or as long as

she is coughing. Once sufficient mucus is thrown out of the body

the coughing will stop by itself.

so you only need to do 2 things hot water to drink and steam breathing.

She will be alright, for sure.

You can't. That is a normal response to the chronic irritation from the trach.

Your lungs constantly bring mucus up the trachea and deposit it down the esophagus. When a trach is in place that not only irritates the airway and stimulates more mucus production, it impedes the normal clearance mechanisms. But your lungs still need clearing. So you cough. There's nothing you can really do about that. Suctioning removes the built up secretions but it doesn't prevent them from building up again.

Do you mean she was intubated with an endotracheal tube? If yes, that irritation is normal and goes away in a couple of days.
