What does my cough mean?

This has been sitting on my mind. So a few years ago I had this weird cough. I physically felt fine ( did not feel tired, no fever, no aching joints and such), but I had this weird cough for about 3-4 days. The first few days I had an bad itch in my throat so even if I held back my cough it would feel worse and I end up coughing worse. I also kinda lost my voice, I could get maybe a couple words or a short sentence out before my voice puttered off into nothing. But physically I felt fine? I went to work and classes ok (aside from coughing the whole time...) Did I have a cold? But shouldn’t I have had a fever or something? Am I thinking too much?
