Is leaving your spoon in your coffee cup as you drink considered rude?
So I have always been in the habit of leaving my spoon in my coffee cup as I drink from it!
I've never considered this to be a rude gesture before today.
I was out for breakfast at a restaurant with my mom and sisters.
My sisters and i all got coffee and when they noticed my spoon in my coffee cup they told me it was bad etiquette.
So I'm asking is are my sisters right? And if leaving my spoon in my cup is really considered rude, who it is offensive too, and why specifically is it rude. What does it imply or signify when i do this that is so in polite?
Thanks to everyone for your input! And I appreciate those who are concerned about the possibility of poking my eye with the spoon, but that has never been an issue!
I really do appreciate all your answers, both pro and con! I awarded Happy Gramps best answer simply because he posted factual input! From now on AT LEAST WHEN I AM IN A restaurant i will remove my spoon from my cup. But when at home Ill do as i have always done!

Table manners for drinking coffee and tea. Four quick don'ts:
Don't leave your spoon in the coffee cup or teacup or mug; place it on the saucer or a plate.
Don't take ice from your water to cool a hot drink.
Don't dunk doughnuts, biscotti, or anything else in your coffee unless you're at an ultracasual place where dunking is the norm.
Don't crook your pinkie when drinking from a cup-an affectation that went out with the Victorians.

Yes. It is not a socially acceptable practice. It is also risky to your eyes and you increase the chance of a spill.

The only problem with leaving the spoon in your cup, is that it may poke yourself in the eye while you drink your coffee. Other than that, it is NOT rude, NOT bad etiquette, NOT offensive, NOT rude.

That's not rude. People have problems with everything these days. One guy calling me at thief for taking extra cup and now your called rude for leaving spoon. It's not rude but its uncomfortable to drink from a cup that has spoon in it though

This all comes down to personal perspective. Simply because your sister feels a spoon in your coffee mug whilst drinking is inappropriate, does not negate your point of view. There is no official etiquette policy on removing the spoon prior to drinking the hot beverage. Ultimately, you do what feels right for you.

It's oafish and unsophisticated. I imagine that people laugh at you behind your back. What function, in your mind, does the spoon have once you've used it to stir your coffee? I think of country bumpkins and hayseeds when I see that and I haven't seen it in a very long time.
